Going to bed at a reasonable hour
Special From Our Own Correspondent
Submitted By Anne Turner, 05 February 2007 | 1212 13

I am finally going to bed at a reasonable hour. I've done it twice so far and plan to continue. The first night I had all sorts of dreams, short dreams touching on a number of neglected areas of my life. Last night, I hallucinated. The baby is still waking up in the night and I bring him into the bed with us to nurse him and then return him to his crib or ask my husband to. This time I asked my husband to return him to the crib and asked him to get the baby's toys out of the bed too, which were, as I imagined, many small plastic soldiers- hallucination number one. Then later I hallucinated, because I dreamed that I was awake? And then really woke up to verify it. I'd thought that my older son had come downstairs and opened our door and asked in his "cheeking" voice, his teasing voice, "Is my mom and dad in here?" And I'd corrected him "Are your mom and dad in here?" And then called his name repeatedly, to tell him to go back upstairs to bed, but my husband told me that he wasn't in the room, that he hadn't come down. And the third thing, I'm looking to verify, but because it's not in the headlines, it may have been a third hallucination. We keep the classical music station on in the bedroom over night, because it seems to sooth the baby. It is muffled somewhat by the humidifier. But at some point in the early morning they give news headlines. I thought I heard that Fidel Castro died and they gave his age, 89. Or did this really happen?

I am pleased that I am finally getting more sleep, after over four years of not getting enough, and I think I may finally be resigning myself to my lot, and attempting to see what life is like when I'm well-rested -- novel idea. But anyway, thought this was just strange. I would do this sometimes while I was pregnant, always with sound, like I would be woken up by a loud sound and try to figure out what it was, but as far as I could determine I had dreamed the sound that had woken me.
